For Sale: 1972 BMW 2002 (European delivery model)
1972 BMW 2002 European delivery to Sicily. Here is certainly a most unusual opportunity. For years I kept my eyes open for a BMW 2002 in original condition and in a color I like. I finally found it six years ago. This is a highly original, yet thoughtfully modified BMW 2002, still with its original European delivery directional indicator lenses. This car was bought in Sicily in October of 1972 by an architect who maintained the car in its original state for 45 years. The dry conditions in Sicily undoubtedly explain the remarkably rust-free condition of the body, which was the major factor in my purchase of it, since it's relatively easy to fix a car mechanically if the body is sound. I have the late owner's Facebook page entry with photographs of the car in Sicily. It comes with the original Italian title and many of the replaced parts. It is currently registered in the US State of Georgia. I bought it in 2017 with 60,000 kilometers (37,000 miles) on the odometer (almost certainly inaccurate based on internal engine wear) and had it shipped to the US. When it arrived, I decided to update and modernize it while preserving its originality to the greatest extent possible. After driving the car for two years, I decided on a complete mechanical restoration including engine rebuild and a 5-speed conversion because I needed it to perform as designed and to be reliable, and because the factory 4-speed transmission is too high-revving at speed. The following work was completed by a top BMW specialist in Atlanta. All receipts will be provided...
Complete disassembly under the hood ended with a total rebuild of the original engine (photos of the rebuild below). After machine work on the block and head, all internal engine parts including slightly larger pistons, special no-leak rings, crankshaft, bearings, cam, and new valves were replaced. A 2-barrel Weber carb replaced the original single-barrel Solex, which transformed its performance. All engine compartment parts are new or rebuilt, including the new internal oil pump, fuel and water pumps (new), radiator and fan (50% more cooling capacity, new from wallothnesch.com), alternator (rebuilt), starter (rebuilt), and Pertronix electronic ignition system (new). New spark plugs, ignition coil, oil and fuel filters, sealed battery, and hoses make it in like-new mechanical condition. The mechanical modifications include a new flywheel, a new clutch, and a 5-speed transmission conversion with a new driveshaft, new shock absorbers/struts front and rear, and a new large-bore 2002tii exhaust system to match the enhanced engine performance. The engine runs perfectly and leaks not a drop of oil. There is simply no weak link remaining to cause problems. There is an original working Blaupunkt Nurnberg M14 radio, modern seatbelts, and coco floor mats. Everything works as intended except for the odometer, which does not turn. The car runs, handles, and stops as designed, idles endlessly without overheating, and it should need nothing to run for many thousands of miles.
I have always used ethanol-free fuel. There is no evidence of any accidents but please note that this is a driver, not a trailer queen. It has never been cleaned with Q-tips. It's a car. It is not cosmetically perfect. It has the original bumpers, body panels, windows, and grill. If something didn't absolutely need to be replaced for the purpose of reliability, it is original.
Asking $46,000. I am 73 years old, I travel constantly, and I rarely get a chance to drive the car, which now needs to go to a new owner who will drive it and enjoy it. Since the rebuild two years ago, I have driven it less than 1000 miles. However, I run it frequently for about 10 miles per drive and keep the battery trickle-charged. Its condition is such that you could just drive it away and go thousands of miles without any concerns.
If you are looking for an original, rust-free "roundie" BMW 2002 in the most understated and elegant color combination (my opinion), totally updated and reliable, and fully capable of running with modern cars on the highway or the backroads, this is your opportunity. I didn't pass it up and neither should you... photos below... I doubt that a car like this--maintained in original condition in a dry climate for 45 years by the original owner, followed by a no-expense-spared mechanical rebuild by the second owner- a car enthusiast -- will ever appear again. And here are the imperfections in detail (below)
A ding in the side mirror

Misshapen visor but it's original
Crack in the dash
Whatever you call it, broken beading, it's an imperfection
